This morning we will be offering a FREE urban bicycling safety clinic from the West Parking Lot at the St Pete Times Forum. For specific location details, click here.
This class covers most of the basics you should know if you are relatively new to the urban bicycling scene or simply have questions about what to do in certain situations. The class will last 90 – 120 minutes and in addition to some Q&A time, we will cover the following:
1. Pre-Ride Inspection
2. Helmets
2.1. Proper Fitting
2.2. But I’m an expert rider…why do I need a helmet?
2.3. 16 years old and under – it’s the law
3. Avoiding Theft
3.1. Tips for locking up your bike
3.1.1. Cable Locks vs. Chain and U-Locks
4. Lights
4.1. Probable cause for being stopped
4.2. Fines
5. Sidewalks
5.1. Standard, “in town” sidewalks
5.2. Mixed use sidewalks (Bayshore Blvd, Meridian, Riverwalk)
6. Lane Positioning – BEING VISIBLE AND PREDICTABLE
6.1. 1 Way Streets – Single lane
6.2. 1 Way Streets – Multi lanes
6.3. Multi lane streets
6.4. Turn lanes
6.5. Stop lights
All participants will receive a free Planet Bike light set ($15.95 value) courtesy of Tampa BayCycle. There will be other giveaways and cold refreshments on hand as well.
