Tomorrow night (March 7) City Bike Tampa will be giving away two brand new Manhattan Cruiser bicycles during Go Green Night with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The NHL Eastern Conference ranked #3 Bolts will face off against the #5 ranked Washington Capitals at 7pm.
The Tampa Bay Lightning will host ‘Go Green Night,’ presented by Waste Services of Florida and Proshred, to encourage recycling and environmental awareness on Monday, March 7 when they take on the Washington Capitals at 7 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Fans who bring six plastic bottles and/or aluminum cans to be recycled by Waste Services of Florida or items including old Washington Capitals jerseys, hats or t-shirts to be shredded by Proshred will receive discounted tickets at a group rate, including $15 terrace corner seats, $30 terrace center seats or $50 plaza end seats. This special ticket incentive will be available on the west plaza prior to the game. All fans are encouraged to arrive to the game early, as the first 5,000 individuals in Lightning gear will receive a Lightning recyclable grocery bag presented by Waste Services of Florida.

Those who ride their bike to the game will receive one complimentary terrace level ticket to that night’s game versus the Capitals. City Bike Tampa will be on hand giving out free bike safety checks as well as complimentary minor adjustments to all fans’ bikes on the plaza. The bike parking area will be staffed throughout the game. The Friends of Clean City along with College Hunks Hauling Junk will also be present in the Forum West Lot through March 6 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. for any fan wishing to bring an old car or boat battery to be recycled. Individuals who make a donation will receive a pair of tickets to an upcoming event at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Speedling Incorporated will also distribute approximately 2,500 geraniums to any guest that would like to take one home after the game. There will be a table on the concourse where fans can receive information on the Lightning’s green efforts and sign up as one of the organization’s Green Team volunteers.
The Lightning Foundation will also take part in the evening’s festivities, with the donation and special presentation of a bicycle to be used by a Tampa Police Department patrol officer in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
Fans may also enter the Tampa Bay Cycle Words for Wheels contest, sponsored by the Lightning Foundation, at http://www.tampabaycycle.com for a chance to win one of two free bikes, courtesy of the Lightning Foundation. The winners will be announced during an on-ice presentation at the game’s intermission.

Last Month City Bike Tampa assisted UT with the assembly of their new student bicycle rental fleet. Shivani Kanji published the following article last week about the program in The Minaret (UT’s campus newspaper):
Students at the University of Tampa can now rent bikes to grocery shop, exercise or even just to take a joy ride to their class, through the new program BikeUT.
Headed by the Department of Campus Recreation in association with City Bike Tampa.
BikeUT allows students, faculty and staff to rent bikes for free with a valid Spartan ID.
“I think it provides a small sense a freedom to students who don’t have a car or bicycle on campus and have to rely on friends or taxis to get around,” said Kathryn White, assistant director of Campus Recreation. “Plus, the weather has been beautiful, making riding so enjoyable.”
Rental bikes are equipped with a helmet and bike lock and an optional basket. Students are encouraged to take precaution and keep their bikes locked when not in use. Student riders can receive a ten percent discount from City Bike Tampa on their purchase of a helmet and lock if they wish to purchase their own.
“We have had several students already take advantage of the program, some are even repeat renters,” said White. “They really like the ability to check out a bike for a few hours to go to the store or just ride around town.”
In regards to helmet use, White comments, “BikeUT encourages and offers the use of a helmet and I would really like to see students making the smart decision to wear one. There are just too many hurried drivers on the road who don’t pay attention to cyclists.”
There is a free urban safety class at the St. Pete Times Forum on November 13 that would be beneficial to students. Campus Recreation hopes to host some of these classes on campus soon.
The main thing to remember is that a bicycle is considered a vehicle and one must follow the same rules as one does with a car: stop at lights and stop signs, signal to turn, ride with traffic, yield to pedestrians and so on.

Among other special incentives to “go green” this evening at the St Pete Times Forum, those who ride their bike to the game will receive free admission into the arena. City Bike Tampa will be on hand giving out free bike safety checks as well as complimentary minor adjustments to all fans’ bikes on the plaza. The bike parking area will be staffed throughout the game.
