    Retro-Refitting a Classic Trek

    July 31, 2009 // 1 Comment »

Last week one of our Franklin Street neighbors brough by this 20+ year old custom frame Trek bicycle.  I believe the seat tube was at least 34″ long (the average length seat tube for an adult, 6ft male is 20-21″).   This was a BIG bike!

What he was interested in was being able to ride it again, but also shedding some weight from the bike by removing the derailleurs, shifters and non-essential sprockets / chain rings.  After gaining a little more insight as to how and where he was planning to use the bike we worked out a plan to retro-fit into the single speed rig pictured below.

Because he was as interested in comfort as he was in riding efficiency, we went with a large comfort seat, rather than something a little lighter, sportier and aerodynamic.  Also, since speed wasn’t much of an issue, we went with a very popular touring tire from Vittoria as opposed to a thinner, slicker road racing type tire.  Everything non-essential to his riding experience in urban Tampa’s flat downtown terrain was sent to the recycle bin.

    Check out the final results…

“Retro-fitting” older bikes with new parts (wheelsets, cranks, tires, brake levers, cables, seats, pedals, grips, bar tape,  etc.) is a great way to bring a well-built classic frame into the 21st century.  It also gives the rider / owner something unique to take pride in while spinning around town.  Not to mention breaking the monotony of riding the same brands and styles that just about every other rider around town is sporting these days.

    New Konas On The Way

    July 15, 2009 // 1 Comment »

We placed an order for a herd of new Kona Bicycles this morning.  Here is a preview of some of the new stuff you might find (pending delivery schedules and early sales) in our shop this weekend.

If you would like an email update, subscribe here for the latest info from City Bike Tampa:

We look forward to seeing you soon!

    Kona Sutra

    Kona Sutra

This is a really kewl bike that we think our commuter friends will totally appreciate.  Not only is the color really FAT but it’s equipped with a great Shimano component set and comes at a comparably fair price.

    Kona Paddy Wagon

    Kona Paddy Wagon

This is hands down one of the fastest and most fun bikes I have had a chance to hop on in awhile.  We sold our first Paddy Wagon about a week before we opened our doors and have been stoked to get more in as quickly as we could.  I will be surprised if this one lasts through the weekend!

For our fixie friends or just fixie hipster wanna-bees, this one comes with a freewheel on one side of the rear hub and a fixed cog on the other.

    Kona Jake

    Kona Jake

Who doesn’t love cyclocross?  Only those who have never experienced it, that’s who!  The Jake is classic cyclocross design.  If you want to see what cyclocross is all about, check out some of the vids on konaworld.tv.

When you think you’re ready to experience it for yourself, come pick up one of our Kona Jakes!

    Kona Dew

    Kona Dew Deluxe

Nice disc brakes and BTW…how would you describe that shade of blue?

    Kona Dew Deluxe

    Kona Dew

The Dew and the Dew Deluxe are great bicycles for the casual rider…or basically your weekend warrior our to get some exercise, hit the islands, cruise Bayshore, grab a cold one in Ybor and see the sights or maybe just catch a “guilt free” burger from Five Guys @ SkyPoint (if there is such a thing).

    Kona Ute

    Kona Ute

Dude…this is pure hardcore utility. Get one of these and make up the cost in gas savings inside of about 3 months.

My first mission if this bad-ass unit remains in the shop past Sunday is to see how many 12 packs of icy cold adult beverages I can pack into those panniers (a.k.a. – the big orange bags straddling that urban surf board over the back wheel).

This has been a great week so far and we are only getting started.
